Lunch at Niko’s Mediterranean Grill & Bistro at 76th and Broadway in Manhattan. The photo for this painting was taken by my lunch companion’s mother a year prior to our moving there. I put in my first NYC job application as server at Niko’s and was hired on the spot, due assuredly to high turnover.

The brunt of the work was buffered by the vast array of staff, customers, and passersby in the windows; fast-paced bouzouki soundtracks on repeat; and savory meals prepared for hungry servers at closing time. The food and sense memories leave me craving.
