Along with many other Americans (thanks to public radio's A Way with Words or reality TV's The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning) I recently learned the Swedish term "hemmablinde," which literally means "home blind"—being so accustomed to your home that you no longer notice its flaws and clutter. I noticed and painted it.
Things are messy right now, whether in my living space or brain. I know you relate. It’s universal: it’s 2025. And it’s personal. If I'm going to paint at all, it has to require no investment or attachment, very little planning, and brief focus. At first this notion was frustrating—crushing, actually—but it's growing on me. Can restrictions be freeing? It's an exciting question.
